Suitable for
contemporary, themed or traditional interiors, a shoji
screen is both
aesthetically and functionally appreciated. Because of its delicate form
and its sheer elegance, it creates a flexible floor plan with a marked
sense of space, by artistically complimenting the natural flow of light.
The emphasis of the shoji screen is
founded on the untainted idea of style and simplicity – “form and
function” crafted from the beauty of the finest natural woods and
materials. Easy to install, light and easy to move, shoji screens
open up a whole fresh, new world, of interior design opportunities.
Whether sliding, fixed or folding in
style, each screen is handmade to our client’s specific dimensions and
finish requirements, down to the very finest detail.
Our screens are an
"absolute delight" for the discerning tastes of the avant-garde interior
designer.

The
practical applications for shoji screens are vast; some common uses
include: sliding doors and screens, cupboard and wardrobe doors,
windows, free standing screens (folding or flat), room dividers, office
partitions, sky light covers, just to name a few. One aspect of the
functional appeal of these versatile screens is the flexibility to
divide one big room in several ways to create different moods and
atmospheres: open them to create a big airy open-plan feel, and close
them to create a cosy, subtle, intimate environment. Next, are
more suggestions which progressively introduce ever broader, specific
scopes of creative applications for the very versatile shoji screen in
your interior designs.
Shoji screens are tastefully and
cleverly employed in many different, inspired interiors, from the
obvious to the sublime. Just imagine these examples: dividing a studio
apartment space into stylish, cleanly defined, separate living areas;
dividing a kitchen/diner into two airy and 'independent' spaces - open
while you are cooking,
closed while you are dining and entertaining guests; creating a
separate, aesthetically pleasing office space in a room used for more
than one purpose; applying the screens as distinctive window treatments
rather than standard blinds or curtains; creating privacy screens for
sliding glass doors or conservatories, which infuse the space with
glowing warmth and light; creating an elegant, private dressing area in
a sumptuous bedroom; applying simple, yet dramatic sliding screens for
artfully dividing clinics, yoga, or dance studios; or, designing a truly
creative and beautiful commercial office interior design. The
possibilities for using shoji screens, in both residential and business
interior designs, are limited only by the imagination. Our innovative
Shoji Cube™ is fast becoming a popular
solution for creating private 'rooms' in studio apartments/flats, large
rooms, warehouse living spaces and clinics.
The Shoji Studio’s sliding door sets,
fixed or freestanding, solid or folding screens are available in various
wood selections, though traditionally, aromatic cedar wood is used with
rice paper backing. We generally use and recommend Warlon acrylic
backing (laminated rice paper) which is washable, extremely strong
offering a high puncture resistance and a degree of fire retardancy, as
well as beauty. If desired, traditional Japanese rice paper or
‘washi’ can also be used. Samples are available, upon request, of
the natural and treated woods we use, along with a broad selection of
Warlon colours, in 6 designs and varying textures, ranging from white to
electric pink!

Each shoji panel is bench
made, individually, by hand, with traditional Japanese tools. The
shoji’s construction is true in keeping with tradition: no nails are
ever used in the frame’s construction.
The delicate translucence of the rice paper draws on and enhances
the use of light, both natural and artificial, in an artistic, delicate
and elegant way; and of course, rice paper, even the laminated kind, is
virtually weightless which enables the use of very delicate timber
sections creating a true design statement for that sought-after spacious, light
and airy feel to your rooms.
Easy to install, light and easy to
move, shoji screens open up a whole new world of interior design
opportunities, and they are more affordable than you may think. As
a guide, Shoji screens cost no more than a fine quality pair of
custom-made curtains. Please
